Gold Fields Ghana, operating the Tarkwa and Damang mines in the Western Region, has made significant strides in land restoration, rehabilitating over 900 hectares of previously disturbed land. This initiative has transformed these areas into productive farmlands and lush forests, fostering economic growth and sustainability for host communities.
The company’s holistic approach to land rehabilitation includes adoption of smart agriculture practices, the use of climatic suited crops, and a sustainable land-use practice that integrates trees into agricultural landscapes after mining with the overall intention to improve productivity and ecological balance.
This approach improves soil health and enhances the long-term sustainability of the land. Crops cultivated include plantain, oil palm, cabbage, tangerine, avocado, cashew, orange, mango, coconut and cocoa, all contributing to food security and creating new economic avenues for host communities.
To date, both Tarkwa and Damang mines have posted more than US$100milllion in cash and guarantees for rehabilitation closure liabilities. At Damang, over 90 community members are actively engaged in rehabilitation and rubber projects, ensuring that these initiatives positively impact the community while creating jobs and strengthening local ties.
The company does concurrent rehabilitation, allowing for the restoration of land, even as mining operations continue. This proactive approach aims for a rehabilitation rate of 70-80% for disturbed areas, reflecting Gold Fields’ commitment to adhering to regulatory standards and leaving a positive environmental legacy.
Since 2018, Gold Fields has proudly transformed more than 50 hectares of mine impacted lands into rubber farms with a 100% success rate. The revenue generated will be funneled into the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation to support development projects and programmes in the Tarkwa and Damang host communities.
The rehabilitation project demonstrates Gold Fields’ commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable future.
