Wednesday, 30 October 2024

The Gold Fields Ghana Foundation and the Canadian Organisation for Development through Education (CODE) have recognised community teachers and schools for their outstanding performance, which has contributed to the success of the Reading Ghana Western Region programme.

Ten (10) teachers and two schools were honoured at a ceremony, held in October 2024 at the Akoon Clubhouse at the Tarkwa mine. The winners received certificates and various souvenirs for excelling in the following categories: Best Teacher (Upper Primary), Best Teacher (Lower Primary), Best Print Rich School, Best Headteacher, Best Performing School and Best Reading Club.

In 2022, the Foundation and the Canadian international NGO developed and implemented the three-year literacy programme in the host communities of the Tarkwa and Damang mines, in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service.

It aims to promote reading and comprehension of school children in 37 public schools. Under the programme, qualified teachers are trained in the efficient use of teaching and learning materials to enable them better support and improve the reading abilities of pupils. Additionally, 34,000 reading books have so far been donated to participating schools.

A midline study conducted in July 2024 found that reading abilities of the school children have significantly improved.
